sonder
n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.
The first time I felt sonder was when I was having a solo lunch at Mc Donald's waiting for my forever-(late)-bestie to show up and have our regular gossip session at the same spot, so naturally i was saving a seat for her, with all the hawk like people lurking around, waiting for me to vacate the place and leave. Among the hawk was a person who decided to not sneak around and be a man, so he approached me and asked if he could take the seat and eat the meal. As it was rush hour and honestly I appreciated the guts of this guy, I allowed him
Minutes passed by and sonder happened, I started thinking how we, two strangers who have never met before and will never meet again are sitting in front of each other, having our meals. I wondered what life he had, what kind of a person he must be, what are his dreams and ambitions, what made him come here all alone to have his meal, is he happy with his life, has he achieved what he has wanted to, and blah blurr bloo my head went on and on and I started smiling. We both were having the lunch at the slowest speed possible
because had to save the seat na :p
Then finally my inquisitiveness won and I asked if he was a student, cause he looked pretty young, he replied that he was a lawyer by the day and an automobile engineer by the night, I was so impressed to here that, that at such a young age he was doing something with his life which most of us don't because we are all so distracted. Then we had a conversation about random stuff till my friend came and then he left. As soon as he left my friend shrieked in a mocking way, asking me the details and I just said he was a stranger.
This story was just a example of this word Sonder, which we all have felt at some point of time. Like we are the extras in somebody else's movie. Like seeing this cute person in the car next to us at a traffic signal or like an old uncle outside a bank or maybe the aunty we see doing yoga every morning at the park etcetera etcetera. We wonder how their life is, how happy/sad they are, maybe they want to talk to someone, vent out their anger, share their happiness, tell a story or just talk to a complete stranger because they dont want to be judged(because strangers dont judge, because maybe strangers are sometimes better than friends), because they know this is the first and the last time you'll ever meet this person.
So whenever you are that person in the background, sipping coffee and eating banana cake and you feel sonder, I would say go talk to that stranger, know about them a little bit, maybe they need to talk, maybe you'll make a difference in their lives, maybe you'll give them hope at that point of their lives when they need it the most , maybe, just maybe. Or maybe they end up doing all that for you. You might never meet them again, but your essence will always stay with them, maybe that person in the background becomes a beautiful memory for them :) .
Maybe, just maybe.
